FPA 462/885

FPA 462 Honors Studio in Visual Art and FPA 885 MFA Visual Art Studio

Instructor: Judy Radul Thursday 9:30 to 12:30, Alexander Centre

(This course outline site will grow and develop as needed during the class)

This is a 5-credit studio course  which should be useful for you working on your Honors portfolio or your MFA Thesis project. It will involve primarily crits and discussions.

Sept. 12: I’d like you to be able to hand in (email to: jaradul@sfu.ca) a written and visual proposal for your semester work. This should be as concrete as possible. If your plans are still in flux then focus on being clear about your process of working and your research, and studio experiments. This proposal should include: 1) Project kindling: a collection of references, images, quotes, that relate to the project and your own past projects, I call it “kindling” because that’s what your starting your “fire” with. 2) Project background: relationship to historical and/or contemporary practices. 3) Proposed project: what are you going to do, how are you going to do it, (methodological and material considerations). This proposal should reflect your intensive research undertaken over the summer.

ALSO on Sept 12: Please present on the proposals above, using some materials such as models, or mock ups or visuals, or whatever is appropriate to your project (but has a material dimension…that is something you make which functions as a model or proposal, you can be creative with this format.) 10 minutes each, be creative about delivering visual (and other) sources, resources and information. Your presentation doesn’t have to be as comprehensive as the written proposal but should concentrate on whatever is most important for you, what is your challenge, your focus, your question, your statement? (It would be nice if you have the written proposal available for all to see however, either as a handout to share or in another format).
